about

Those of us in the States who do not have any Gaelic or Irish language skills tend to read the utmost of serious and profound meanings into the lyrics of Gaelic songs. Hearing the lyrics to this catchy Gaelic song translated into English cracks me up, and since I took the much longer song off this album, I decided to put this serious ear worm (and cool tune) on the album as a bit of a lark. It flows very nicely into “Grey Hag of Raasay,” which is just barely a different tune. I first saw both of these in Barry Shears’ Gathering of the Clans, but I think these settings are closest to Eliza Ross’s 1812 manuscript from the Isle of Raasay. I think it is likely that at least one if not several of the pipers Ross listened to on Raasay regularly played high Bs, as so many of the tunes are great for Highland Pipes with the second octave B.
