about

This chipper tune served as the intro music for much of Season Five, but I was self-conscious of calling the album something that very much looks like “The Irish Hot Boy” with a picture of myself on the cover. The tune title possibly refers to an Uilleann pipe chanter, Hautboy being the eighteenth-century name for a predecessor or relative of what we would call an Oboe. There was not an uniquely Irish Oboe when this tune was popular, the closest thing being an Irish bagpipe. If “Irish Hautboy” was a reference to Uilleann pipes, the name never took off, as this tune seems to be the only place the phrase shows up. Interestingly for a tune that possibly references Irish pipes, there are none in this recording. I always thought I would go back and add some to it, but I love the bubbly sound of the Denny Hall D Smallpipes too much to dilute them with an Uilleann Pipe overdub.
