John Charles’ Fireproof Pipes
This Album really would not have been possible without the Generosity of John Charles Bauschatz. I half-jokingly begged for someone to loan or give me a set of Lowland Pipes on the podcast, and John Charles did just that. He had a set of Nate Banton Border pipes which he wasn’t able to play for an extended period of time while his house was being rebuilt after a fire. These Border pipes survived the fire, but John Charles being a kind neighbor felt they were too loud to play in a rental apartment. Further evidence of his kindness is that he sent them to me to enjoy and fall in love with. The week before returning them, I started to really get a handle on how to play them, even pinching up to High C despite the chanter and reed design not being built with that in mind. I was also experimenting successfully with bringing the various drones in at different times. I recorded several of the tracks on this album in that last week, but this tune, the tune I wrote for the pipes which survived a house fire I didn’t get well enough. This has pushed me to get more comfortable with pinching up to High C, and getting my drones stable enough to come in mostly in tune, so the loan of John Charles’ Fireproof pipes have made me better at playing Highland pipes as well! Thanks for the loan of the pipes John Charles!
