about

Tunes are: Colonel MacBain’s Fancy, Brenda Stubbert’s Reel, The Gravel Walk, Highlandman Kissed His Mother & Jenny Sutton

This set came from me looking at several different settings for “Highlandman Kissed his Mother/Granny” and “The Gravel Walk.” The two tunes are said to be related, but playing most of the settings does not make that obvious. The only versions which I could find which really bear resemblance to one another is the four-part setting for “Gravel Walk” popular at Irish sessions and the four-part version of “Highland Man Kissed His Mother” from John Rook’s manuscript. I, like many pipers in my generation, am accustomed to pairing “Gravel Walk” with “Brenda Stubbert’s Reel,” and after meeting with Barry Shears and seeing his setting, which popularized the tune, I decided to include it in the set. Barry’s first book also provided the setting for “Colonel MacBain’s Fancy.” “Jenny Sutton” is a lovely country dance tune from Joseph Dale’s collection of country dances and reels.
