06: C**t’s a Monkey, Jackson’s Turret. On Whistle:
In 1746 Pastoral piper Geoghegan published the first tutor on playing the “New Bagpipe” and included C***t’s a monkey with the collection of tunes following the instructions. Geoghegan also called this tune Sleg’s Hornpipe if you want to play it for people with less historic ears. The “C” word was already rather vulgar in the eighteenth century, hence Geoghegan starring it out, but it does appear in a handful of tune titles. Jackson’s Turret, is what eighteenth century Irish Piper Walker Jackson called his home. Many tunes are attributed to Walker Jackson, but he printed one collection of his tunes in 1774 which is wear I got this setting.
