Appletreeleaves is Meikle Better, Old Gala House Composed by Matt Seattle (GHB)
All players of traditional tunes from the Scottish (or English) Borders are tremendously fortunate to have Matt’s work transcribing and finding concordances and histories of tunes. In The Great Northern Tune book, Matt explored William Vickers’ massive collection and of course William Dixon’s book is one that has defined what Border music should sound like to me. Apart from single manuscript sources, his book: Geordie Syme’s Paircel o Tunes is an amazing collection of the likely Repertoire of an eighteenth century Border piper all in one book (people have asked if I would ever put out a tune book of the music I play, but basically Matt already has in the massive Geordie Syme’s Paircel o Tunes).
I purchased Matt’s William Dixon book in Ullapool in 2019 but did not get around to posting anything out of it until Season 4 Episode 20 of the podcast. www.wetootwaag.com/s4e20
Matt reached out to talk after hearing me play Dixon’s Setting for Jack Lattin on Highland Pipes and was very encouraging. He has continued to be generous with his time and talents. Apart from his work with transcribing manuscripts Matt is also a gifted composer and the main reason I took up Border piping to begin with. It was important to me that I include a couple of his original tunes on this album which is all about helping me get a set of Border or Lowland pipes of my own, fitting then that I recorded these tunes after my loaner set had been returned, so they are played on Highland Pipes.
Thanks Matt!
2021: These tunes make up part of the tremendous Gala Water Suite written by Matt Seattle and published in his new book, Ruberslaw.

I've played Highland pipes and uilleann pipes since the nineties. My albums are an opportunity for me to keep the tunes and songs I have most enjoyed from creating the podcast.
